Memphis vs. Tenn
This Saturday, Memphis and Tennessee will meet each other to decide who REALLY is number one in the nation. Let’s compare:
Memphis
* Crappy conference
* Undefeated
* Most wins by narrow margins (against crap C USA teams)
Tennessee
* Good conference
* Only 2 losses
* Has some good solid victories
All I’m trying to say here folks is that Memphis is like the bigger kid on the playground who always made sure he played against the weakest kids to ensure victory and his perceived dominance. Sure, he could hold his own against the other talented kids, but he was doughey and soft from a lack of real competition.
This, would be Memphis. Since the mass exodus to the Big East, the CUSA has become a joke. Memphis was the only decent (I said decent, not good) team left. Memphis chose between taking the next step to becoming a marquis team, and becoming a soon-to-be mid major powerhouse. They chose the second tier.
CUSA, even in its infancy, has always sucked. Being the number one team in the nation while in CUSA has always been a formula for disappointment. Look at the Bob Huggins Cinci squads in the 90’s. Number one until an embarassment in the tournament.
The same will happen to Memphis – they’ll most likely lose to UT, but that will be only one, maybe two losses for the season (who’s going to beat them after UT? Tulsa?), and then every team will hand over their lunch money in the CUSA tourney, which will land Memphis a 1 or 2 seed in the big dance. As their role of big dawg in CUSA has taught them so well, they’ll roll over some 15 or 16 seed sacrificial lamb; then be destroyed by an 8 or 7 seed in the second round.
Congrats Memphis. You’ve repeatedly beaten the chess club and the debate team. Now it’s time to play the varsity basketball team.
